Unit Outline
Year 12 Media and Photography. 10 weeks of 3 hour periods.
Week one: Re-cap of basic Photography, styles and techniques
- Re-capping on lower school course of photography. Discuss as a class and brainstorm all photography we can remember from the previous course.
- Find images online as examples and write short descriptions of each focusing on style and techniques
Week two : ATAR Skills and processes Unit 3 - Photographic art in magazines
- Styles and conventions in magazine
- Looking at examples of different magazines and assessing the style and conventions of magazines and what it tells us about the genre.
- Who would we expect the audiences to be?
- Fashion and women's magazines: use of portraiture and imagery.
- Re-cap types of photography and brainstorm in class discussion how we would relate these to magazines
Week three: Portraiture
- More in depth lesson of Portraiture as a photographic form
- Looking at examples of portraiture and brainstorming ideas in class discussion
- Research and make posters using the computers - What makes a portrait
- Practical session : Try out in class using cameras and other students as models
Week four: Graded session. (20%) Setting up Studio and basic lighting to take portrait photographs
- Practical lesson where we will be using the studio to learn how to set up basic studio equipment and lighting
- Group work: set up the studio and light setting and each take a couple of portrait style photographs of each other. Each person should have two photographs of other classmates by the end of the class to later use as part of their work in other lectures.
- For this session you will be assess on group work and ability to work together to set up studio equipment in a professional manner
Week five: Learning Photoshop
- Students will need image one from session three
-Using the programme on the computers, we will look at how to do basic editing using Adobe Photoshop, using images from lesson three.
-Basic editing techniques will be learnt including : Layers and masks, retouching and repairing, and composition.
Week six: Photoshop further techniques
-Further learning on Photoshop using more editing techniques. This week will will learn how to make adjustments to contrast and colour balance, adding colour and fancy designs/graphics, different looks and styles.
- Use and add these new techniques on the photographs we used in lesson four
Week seven: Photoshop all techniques covered continued
- Further time to practice and use photoshop techniques we have covered in previous lessons.
- Use this time to practice each editing technique we have covered and further develop your individual style of editing.
Week eight : Magazine Cover analysis
- Investigate different exempts of magazine covers from different genres
- What can we pick out what we honk has been edited?
- What editing techniques do we think have been used?
-Brain storming group discussion using different examples for each group
- Research different magazine covers and make notes on what we think they tell us through connotations of the magazine
- Who do we think are the intended readers for each magazine example and why?
Week nine : Preparation for assignment 2 and short in class exam assignment 1 (10%)
- Spend this lesson running over techniques learnt from previous lessons from both practical and theory;
Portraiture, Studio basics, Photoshop.
-Research magazine covers: class discussion and brainstorming taking notes covering Lesson six: Connotations of magazine covers, what they tell us, reader.
- Choose any magazine cover of your choice, and write a short rationale (approx 300 words) on who you believe the reader is for this magazine and why: Mentioning the layout, photo/imagery used, fonts, colours, background.
- Last 30 mins of this lesson will be a short in-class exam, made up of 10 short answer and choice questions on portraiture, studio set up and PhotoShop techniques.
Week ten : Final Grading, Assignment 2 (40%)
- Using the second image taken from lesson three, students must completely edit this image using skills learnt from this course and creating your own style magazine cover.
- write a 350-500 work rationale explaining how you edited it i.e what techniques you used, and why you designed your magazine cover the way you have. Also mention captions, titles and tagline you have used, and what text you have used and why.

Practical lesson 20% week 4 : Setting up a studio with basic lighting and creating 2 portrait photographs.
